Till 1948, IPS was known as IIP and IIP stands for Indian Imperial Police. The IIP was started by the British government when India was a slave. The IIP was introduced in 1861 as Superior Police Services but later changed its name to IIP or Indian Imperial Police.
IPS is one of the three All India Services constituted under Article 312 of the Constitution of India. The IPS officers provide senior-level leadership to Police Forces both in the States and at the Centre.
